Diane Feeney, inspired by her father, Chuck Feeney, the co-founder of Duty Free Shoppers, was guided by the philosophy, "giving while living." Chuck Feeney donated his entire business interests to Atlantic Philanthropies and ensured that the foundation would pay-out in his lifetime. Diane and her family set up a family foundation, the French American Charitable Trust (FACT), to fund social justice causes in the United States and France. Now, FACT is paying out it's $40 million dollar endowment. Diane believes it's time for older foundations to step down and for new ones to come in.
Diane started working with her family's organization as a volunteer, but soon found that FACT could do truly amazing things with added staff and a clear mission. Diane focused the foundation's funding on community organizations and grassroots groups, directly helping people and organizations who suffer from social inequality. FACT enabled people who were silenced to speak up and get the services they needed.
Motivated by her father's philosophy, Diane wants her family's foundation to pay-out in her lifetime. After having donated $54 million to social justices causes, FACT will soon close its doors. Diane is incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to do the work that she and FACT were able to accomplish. Diane is moving on to the next phase of her life, but not before sharing FACT's story, in the hope that it will inspire other donors and fundraising organizations.
